Palissy, Bernard

(ca. 1510-1589 or 1590)
   ceramicist, scholar
Born in Lacapelle-Biron, near Agen, Bernard Palissy, who would become known for his ceramic pieces with mythological or rustic images (insects, reptiles) in low relief, traveled before settling down as a glassmaker in Saintes. After years of research, he discovered the secret of the composition of enamel, producing from it a smooth glazed pottery. At that time, although he had become a huguenot, he enjoyed the protection of Catherine de' medici, to whom he was royal potter, and of the constable de montmorency (see montmorency family). Much later, however, he was imprisoned in the bastille (1589) for refusing to abjure the Protestant faith. An artist, Palissy was also a scholar, chemist, and geologist and a precursor of paleontology in his observation of fossils.
